– With our Sonic drilling rig available for all assignments where ground investigations are relevant, – The Sonic rig allows us to reduce uncertainties in interpreting the data basis, and can provide better assessments based on verified information. We can now manage to take samples at conditions and depths where conventional drilling rigs have to report failures, says Ragnhild Bjørnå, department manager at Multiconsult Norway.
The Sonic drilling rig has its “home” at Multiconsult’s department in Stavanger, but the rig operates throughout the country - and is in demand.
Bjørnå says that more and more customers are becoming aware of how important it is to have increased knowledge of ground conditions in construction processes. This applies to depth to rock, classification of loose materials and rock, information about contaminated soil and determination of groundwater levels, to name a few. Investigations with the Sonic rig can prevent delays and postponements in projects, because surprises are largely avoided during the construction process.
– We are seeing an increasing number of liability cases and delays in projects that arise due to insufficient knowledge of the ground conditions. By using a drilling rig like Sonic, we get more accurate data and can offer customers reduced risk in the projects, says Bjørnå.
Odd Arne Fauskerud, Director of Geosciences at Multiconsult, says there has been a significant cost development from the initial estimate to the actual final cost for a number of projects.
– In my experience, it pays to do thorough investigations in advance, if we are talking about projects where the ground conditions are crucial. This provides a much lower risk of both construction stoppages, delays, conflicts and cost overruns. In addition, investigations with this type of rig provide a much better basis for decision-making for our customers, says Fauskerud.
