Covering over 122,000 square metres and comprising more than 5,700 rooms, the hospital will serve 200,000 local residents and provide specialist healthcare services to over 500,000 people in the region. The hospital also plays a key role in the urban development of a new area close to the water near the city of Drammen, 40 km from Oslo.

Organisation and Collaboration
Responsibility for the new hospital in Drammen was shared between two project organisations. The South-Eastern Norway Regional Health Authority oversaw the project and established a dedicated project organisation with resources from Norwegian Hospital Construction Agency. The work was carried out in close collaboration with Vestre Viken Hospital Trust.

Key Contributions from Multiconsult
Multiconsult has played a central advisory role throughout the project, from concept and preliminary design to detailed engineering.

  • Concept Phase and Preliminary Design (2014–2015)
In autumn 2014, the CURA group was awarded the task of preparing the concept phase report and preliminary design for the new hospital. The group included Henning Larsen Architects, LINK Arkitektur, Bølgeblikk Arkitekter, and Multiconsult. The contract covered architecture, landscape architecture, and all engineering disciplines. Multiconsult also prepared the zoning plan for the hospital. The project team delivered a complete preliminary design for the entire hospital.

  • Detailed Design and Construction Phase (2018–2025)
Detailed design began in January 2019, with construction starting in autumn the same year and planned occupancy in 2025. In this phase, Multiconsult was responsible for environmental design and water/wastewater and HVAC systems. The environmental contract included contaminated soil, waste, environmental management, risk assessments, material selection, and greenhouse gas emissions. The HVAC contract covered heating, ventilation, water and wastewater, energy, and indoor climate. The project set high standards for BIM deliverables, including complete models and expertise in digital collaboration and coordination.

Sustainability and Energy Efficiency
The project meets energy requirements in accordance with the passive house standard for both the building envelope and technical systems. As part of the HVAC and water/wastewater delivery, thorough assessments were made regarding operational needs and simultaneity to avoid oversizing key thermal installations. The environmental follow-up plan set requirements for sustainable solutions and material use.
