It is in our cities that the greatest societal challenges confront us, but it is also where the greatest opportunities can be found. The way we plan and develop our cities will shape society for generations to come.
Cities and towns are developing rapidly. Climate change, population growth, technological advances and increasing pressure on land are pushing municipalities, businesses and residents to set new expectations for how we plan urban areas.
Climate‑resilient and robust cities must withstand more extreme weather and make use of nature‑based solutions. Cities with local energy production, energy‑efficient systems and smart buildings reduce environmental impact and improve quality of life.
Population growth makes it necessary to densify where housing, services and infrastructure already exist. Developing around transport hubs, building upwards and creating more flexible buildings are key measures for meeting these challenges. Areas previously used for industrial or port activities can be transformed into new housing, business districts and attractive recreational spaces.
For us, it is about developing cities that work today and are prepared for tomorrow. By planning for present needs and future demands, we create green, smart and vibrant cities — for the time we live in, and the times ahead.
